D850 AF-C Focusing Speed

All,

New poster, been visiting for a while.

Recently picked up a D850 for mostly motorsports work. Noticed on my last outing many of my shots were out of focus while trying various shutter speeds, angles, etc. All with single point or single-expanded focus point. Didn't try the 3D as I had no luck with my little one.

It's the speed... When coming at you or going away from you the focus can't seem to keep up. Maybe I'll get a shot out of 5-7. Maybe none. Subject going in/out of different lighting exacerbates the issue.

Would switching to DX mode help? Or do I simply have to purchase a D5...

All Tamron lenses; 15-30; 24-70; 70-200 and 15-600. The 70-200 seems to be the fastest. I didn't try DX. Going to try a few things before my next trip, but wondering if there's any suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

Nick
