The minimum focus distance doesn't cause any issues if it reduces. It could go to the surface of the lens for all I care. There's no need to use the lens at it's minimum focus distance sometimes the infinity setting works better.

The Important thing is maximum focus distance & that the minimum is close enough for the magnification desired.

Yes it gets more difficult as the effective dioptre goes up, but that's not from the minimum focus the lens can achieve.

That's what I remember with a P&S. Minimum focus was at the wide angle only. With diopters, I related to max zoom and infinity. The working distance at minimum focus could be a lot farther away than without the diopter.  That's why I stacked in increments.
