Hi Guys !
I got the new cam and i like it. At least for the 4K. I will take your general consensus and go with dedicated m34 lenses because based on what you guys say, i think ill only benefit on longer focal ranges rather than wider lenses.
In that light is there a prime 7mm or so which would cost quite less and is directly compatible with the G7 while giving auto-focus and aperture control via camera body ?
I'm afraid no.
You mean as in, none that your aware of ?
No 7mm AF prime lens produced for M43 and so my answer is no. There are only limited MF option.
Because there are quite a few options no. The problem with the 12-32mm etc
Are you referring to the 12mm-32mm f/3.5-5.6 pancake Panasonic M43 lens?
is that they are all around 1200 USD in my country.
If so, it is selling around <US$110 in my city (grey market price). I suppose you could get one at similar price (or a little more) over the web.
Actually we rarely need to pay >US$1000 for a native M43 ultra wide~wide angle lenses. The following are offering price in my City (price in bracket is grey market offering as per https://www.price.com.hk/category.php?c=100043&brand=Panasonic&gp=14 ):
Pana Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 US$670~860 (US$600~720);
Pana 12-35mm f/12.8 Mk-II US$860 (US$640~700);
Pana Leica 8-18mm f/2.8-4 US$920 (US$850~720);
Pana 7-14mm f.4 US$900 (US$550~620);
Oly 7-14mm f/2.8 Pro US$900;
Oly 8mm f/1.8 fisheye US$650;
Oly 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro US$470~590;
Oly 12-100mm f/4 Pro US$960~1,200;
Oly 12mm f/2 US$500~590;
Oly 9-18mm f/4-5.6 US$500.
(P.S. the cheaper cost is because no tax in my city)
Considering the conversion valuation in my country for USD value wise that is like you spending 2400 USD in your country. Literally.
Another reason why i asked is. Why pay for a zoom etc if your ok with just one fixed focal length. My sigma 10-20mm was good on my 550d body and ive ALWAYS used it only at 10mm ever.
A prime lens, if either of the two M43 consortium members are going to produce one, it must be a fast speed lens. Because there is a cheap Oly 9-18 f/4-5.6 for the consumer class use, the Pana 7-14 f/4 for a step higher IQ and at the luxury end there is the Olympus Pro 7-14 f/2.8. As there are already f/4~f/2.8 coverage between 7mm to 14mm (many consumer class f/3.5ish to pro f/2.8 lenses covers the 12~18...), any ultra wide angle prime lenses with speed slower than f/2.8 becomes meaningless.
You could imagine how much an ultra wide angle plus fast speed lens would cost.
Until now, there are the Olympus 8mm f/1.8 fisheye, the Olympus 12mm f/2 and Pana Leica 12mm f/1.4 and none of them are cheap. The price could be much higher for a 7mm f/1.8 or f/2 lens if it will be made.
There is also a 8mm f/8 fisheye which has very limited use.
So i thought sometimes we could pick up a good branded lens which has just one focal length and be done with it.
Agreed. But at the end a zoom lens can always gives us more convenient than a prime lens can't offer. I am perfectly happy with my 7-14 f/4.
