X-E3 vs. X-T20 and back button focus

Hi Everyone... I'm looking to get into the Fuji system (currently Nikon and M4/3). I actually owned an X100 when it first came out (wanted it so back I bought it gray market from Thailand), but ultimately there were too many performance compromises. But I've always been a fan of Fuji's IQ and am thinking of jumping into an X-E3 or an X-T20 as an everyday/travel camera that doesn't compromise on IQ. One thing... I've gotten to the point where I can't live without back button focus (ok, slight exaggeration) and have heard some mixed things about the ergonomics for back button focusing on the X-T20 and X-E3. Any first hand user reports that verify or contradict would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I realize that both cameras are pretty similar so the decision between the two is essentially guided by whatever form factor you want, but curious about what people would recommend for someone getting into the Fuji system. I'm leaning toward X-E3 mostly because I'm getting real tired of having my nose pressing against a screen. But then I wonder whether it would be smarter to get a used X-E2 and an extra lens instead.
