The Sunny Sixteen Rule.

Can anyone explain this?

On a sunny day set aperture to f/16 and shutter speed to the reciprocal of the ISO setting for a subject in direct sunlight. For example: f/16, 1/100, ISO 100 or f/16, ISO 400, 1/400 or f/8, 1/400, ISO 100. Adjust as needed (more exposure) for hazy sun or cloudy, less exposure for bright sun snow scenes. This served me well back in the days of shooting Kodachrome slides outside with no exposure meter.
