Far from obselete indeed, I appreciate Merrill more today than at any other time. The sense of depth in the first shot is precisely why.

P.S. manual focus? I shot the 18-35mm in AF for the first time and found it severely back-focussed, bl*ody frustrating! At first glance, I'd say that you've nailed critical focus here.

I was experimenting with auto-focus AND manual focus, but I think that first shot of the orange iguana was manual focused. I am surprised how well the lens was auto-focusing though. I had the impression that auto-focus on the SD1 Merrill was really not very accurate, but it seemed pretty good this time - maybe because I was closer to my subject than normal.
