Oshiro 500mm F6.3 telephoto
1

So I've been really curious about this dirt cheap 500mm F6.3 normal (non-mirror) telephoto from OshiroOptics.com but couldn't find *any* reviews or samples other than blurbs on Amazon and one Youtuber in Portuguese... whose verdict was "I wouldn't buy it because it shakes too much" 🙄

Oshiro's superwides seem to gather some praise.

The 500mm seems to have nice modern coatings and they claim low-dispersion glass. 4 elements, one more than the superb soviet Tair 3S 300mm f4.5 (which is superb and easily comparable to my AF Nikkor 300mm F4 ED )

So at about $150 CAD, I figured i might as well see for myself. Can't be that bad.
The results are... interesting.

It certainly *is* pretty sharp, even at 24MP. But what lets it down is very low contrast with any kind of frontal light (very easily fixed with 'dehaze' or 'contrast' sliders), and severe chromatic aberrations on high-contrast edges (not always fixable).

The build is pretty damn nice, all aluminum, including that large tripod foot, but excluding the plastic hood.

Reviewers on Amazon conclude "you get what you pay for" but in this case I dare to say you actually get a bit more. IQ reminds me a lot of vintage telephotos of the 70s, all those third-party Vivitars and even the old, non-AF Nikkor 300mm 9although the latter had severe blue fringing rather than the green/red CA of the Oshiro). Overall... not too bad, and certainly workable.

The lens itself...
