AF accuracy Lumix 100-300 vs 100-300 II

I recently purchased a used 100-300mm for my G9 as a light weight birding option. I have gotten a few nice sharp images, so I assume that optically it is capable, the problem is that those are few and far between. The vast majority, while sort of ok looking at them in LR look ok, as soon as I view at a larger size, it is apparent that they just aren't critically sharp.

I know reviews say there is no difference optically, but I also read that AF is much better with the version II lens. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from those of you with experience with both lenses. Is it worth the extra few hundred?  Thanks in advance.
