Help with strange exposure problem?

My partner shot  several indoor portraits (at night, no flash) at a conference with an XT1 (35/1.4 I think) and thought they came out fine, but the JPGs are very dark and I had to lighten them for her.  She shot in manual at 1/180, f/2, ISO 800, AWB which I've tried and it seems about right for indoor lighting, certainly not that far off. She is a bit tech-shy.  Any idea what could have gone wrong, or why she wouldn't have seen any problem in camera, which not only meters but previews exposure  in the finder?
