Best lens for bird photography?

Are there any Sony photographers out there that photograph birds?  If so, please help!  Forgive this post if there is already other info on this forum out there.  I did some basic searches but did not find what I needed.  Admittedly, my photography knowledge is moderate, at best, so I could've passed by it without even realizing it.

Bottom line - I'm going on a 1-day birding trip to the Gulf of Mexico in December to photograph whooping cranes and other birds.  I have the Sony A7 III.  I don't do much wildlife photography, so I plan to rent a lens and/or teleconverter, since I wouldn't use it often.  The question is which lens would be best to rent?  I was looking at renting the Sony 100-400 f/4-5.6 FE GM OSS lens, along with a 1.4 converter.  Is this the best lens available for bird photography on the Sony A7 III?  Or, is there something else I should consider.

Several years ago, I went on the same trip with an early Sony A7 and a Sony 70-200mm lens.  My pictures were great, but they seemed soooooo far away, as the boat can only get so close to these beautiful birds.  So, I know I need a longer lens this time.  Happy for any suggestions.
