Paint Mines - Calhan CO

This small, but spectacular geological formation is about an hour and forty five minutes drive south-east of Denver. We finally made the drive and it was definitely worth it.

The spaces are quite tight and I felt this is one of those places where repeated visits will yield better compositions.

The terrain looks like any other place in the eastern Colorado prairie

It is a short walk from the parking lot - you crest a small ridge & voila!

Lots of opportunity for abstract compositions

Early morning or late evening light is essential to bring out the colors

The blue skies make color correction difficult

a broader view

The space is quite small & tight.

I loved this gully.

I took this one to photoshop & processed the shadows independently of the highlights.
