Suddenly "mounts" are the new buzzword.

Trying to get my head around mount "exclusivity", especially in light of recent "consortiums".  I'm not sure which question to ask first!

  1. Are mount types protected by patents?  If so, is there more to a mount patent than just the flange and throat sizes?  Is one manufacturer required to have notable differences in their mount to that of a rival company?
  2. Are manufacturers segregating themselves by mounts in order to protect lens sales?  If so then are the new alliances merely a method of reducing costs and shoring up the solvency of the parties involved?
  3. Are different mounts going to be the new battleground now that the megapixel war seems to have cooled and lost it's appeal to marketers?
