I didn't start out questioning the accuracy of the distance scale. I was wondering why I had so many oof shots and then noticed this randomness in displayed distance. Some slight difference I'd expect. Not this amount. Makes the thing seem pointless, especially if it has no correlation to actual distance set by lens.

It might sound a little sad, but the hit-and-miss isn’t from the camera, it is mostly from the 18-55 lens. Don’t know why, but I had a better hit ratio with this lens on the x-t1 then on the x-pro2. Maybe it is the af speed and accuracy what might be a little off. The other lenses I have are a lot better with the hit-and-miss, or almost never miss focus.

One thing you will notice is that if you put the focus point at it's smallest, it is consistent. Accurate I don't know, but it is consistent.

I wasn’t talking about the distance/dof scale. I know it isn’t accurate and consistent well. Use it on a flat brick wall or busy wallpaperand you will see variations in the scale. It’s the final picture itself. Sometimes it is better to use af-s/mf together to see if it is in focus.

Ah, the behavior you described sounded more like the distance scale.
