Canon Factory Service Turnaround
3

A few weeks ago - middle of the summer - the automated sensor cleaning routine on my Canon 5D Mk 4 began returning an error code. I had a busy summer of shooting ahead, so I simply turned the function off and was a little more attuned to lens changes and practices that would keep dust and sand off my sensor.

Last week I returned the body to Canon Factory Service in Jamesburg, NJ for servicing - which I normally do on an annual basis about this time of year anyway. The "bottom PCB" was not functioning and was replaced for $250 - this at the 77,000 shuttercount mark. No idea how or why it failed - I don't recall any hard drops or water-events. It just failed.

I paid the bill and had the camera back in exactly one week, Tuesday to Tuesday, following a brief phone confab authorizing the repair late last Thursday afternoon. I don't subscribe to Canon Professional Services, so I got no special accelerated service-treatment.

My point with this post was to relate the quick turnaround time. I read in too many posts where someone writes about their reluctance to send their camera in for service because "they were told it would take six to eight weeks to repair". That has never been my experience with Canon Factory Service. I send it in, pay the bill and they send it back lickity split. In a perfect world these things would never need service - but I don't baby my equipment and things like this simply happen. So - point now belabored - if you have an issue with your camera, especially if it is under warranty, don't anguish over it too long before simply sending it off for service. I now, one again, shoot with the confidence that my 5D Mk 4 is performing entirely within factory spec, and that's a good place to be.
