Epidermal warming (D750)

I've never really had any complaints about pictures taken with my D750, until recently. I'm talking specifically about skin tones.

Last weekend, a photographer friend and I were sent to work at the same photo event together. He was shooting with Canon gear. When we uploaded our work to the event's  website, I couldn't believe how warm my Nikon's skin tones were compared to his Canon shots. And the more I looked at his photos, the more unnatural mine became to me.

I know I can adjust colors, etc., in camera, but I also know that the results will be subjective. Would I be better off doing a manual white balance before I shoot, rather than rely on auto white balance?
