C&C: Edinburgh sunset

Morning all

I'm trying to improve my landscape/cityscape photography and post processing technique.

I'm really not sure how I should approach shooting straight into the sun and I can't quite out my finger on it, but I'm really not very happy with how my picture has come out.

My image was taken/edited as follows:-

  • Two exposures, both of which were exposed for the sky, but one more so than the other, in order to get a little bit of detail out of the city itself.
  • Cropped in at the sides a little to give more focus on the road and buildings at the centre of the frame.
  • Opened the shadows a touch (circa half a stop).
  • Dropped the highlights a little.
  • Dodged the road and the buildings on the right.
  • Burned the lower left and some parts of the clock tower.
  • Increased the exposure on the face of the clock so it was readable.

I shot at f22, which was unintentional.  I'd normally have shot this at f8-f11.

How would you have edited this?  Would you use a brighter exposure of the city for more detail or use a single frame and leave the city looking closer to a silhouette?

Any and all feedback/advice welcome.

Chris
