Re: In search of a Light weight bag pack for a safari
Weighing in (pun intended) with some thoughts on light weight travel:
• Not quite clear what you will have to squeeze into the 15 kg weight limit: equipment like a sleeping bag etc? If so, this will be tough.
• Do you need all the gear you mentioned? Or could you accept a gap between the 12-40 you will definitely need and the 100-400 you will definitely need? That could save you 880 grams for the 40-150.
• 2 bodies is a given, 3 might be too much, given the weight limit. So I'd limit it to 2 bodies. Not sure if one of the Lumix chargers might charge the G9 battery as well as the G85 (if you buy it), so possibly one charger could do. (My G85 charger deals with the smaller GX85 battery.) Although the G85 has 505 grams vs. the Oly's 390 grams, that might be worth it.
• I second the idea to get some compartmentalization, e.g. with F-stop's ICUs. Which you could put in the lightest (and maybe rather cheap) backpack that fits the size requirements and your needs. So no need for a dedicated camera bag.
• The Osprey Farpoint 40 is a great bag (I own it) - for one bag travel. A sturdy (and lighter!) medium size duffel bag might be the better option for the bag that goes into he hold. Also, the Farpoint is not really squeezable - and that's what is important for the guys who put the bags into the plane.
• My setup for travel not on Safari, but with the military (no weight requirements, so no lightweight travel, but limited space on armored vehicles) is a sturdy, not too big daypack (5.11 Rush 12) with a Mountainsmith inset which holds a G85 with 12-40 attached, a GX85 with PL15mm attached plus a Pana 45-200, with place left for a charger. That leaves room for a rain jacket, an insulation jacket, even a laptop if necessary, plus an external bottle holder. The rest goes into a medium size duffel.
