In my experience: I had a Canon A7 (3.2MP small camera, I think that's the model, look it up) whose sensor died.  The menu came up on the LCD, on a black background.  I took a picture to test it, sure enough the picture was completely black.

I bought a Panasonic FZ7 and used it for years, traded it in and bought a G10 (defeatured G2).  I used that for five years, shot thousands of pictures, and traded it in and bought a G7.  After perhaps 2.5 or 3 years I traded in the G7 and a couple of old lenses, and bought a G9 which I am very happily using now.  None of my Panasonic cameras or lenses have needed service. Not any, ever.

I treat my equipment well, so I won't comment on durability.  But:

I would say no, Panasonic gear's reliability is not comparable to Canon, it is BETTER!

That has been my experience.
