Re: In search of a Light weight bag pack for a safari
I’m considering the same situation for scheduled upcoming travel so have been following this thread. Previously I’ve travelled with a travel backpack and then some sort of lightweight single camera sling. Inclement weather has been an expected issue on prior trips while on foot and I have used and liked the Miggo holsters in bad/unknown weather and they pack practically flat in a suitcase. They are also lightweight but not really cheap. If you buy the adapter the camera bag strap doubles as a very comfortable and rugged camera strap which both myself and my wife find very comfortable even on long walks.
More and more weight and space is an issue and I’m not as worried about water on our planned safari (South Africa), plus much of the photography tour will be based from vehicles. I’m strongly considering a robust camera backpack for flights, including international and bush flights, and then for most of my walking around some of those lightweight wraps like the peak design shell or think tank ultralight wrap for the game drives and walks. I can carry an extra battery and sd card in my pocket and I plan on walking with two bodies with lenses mounted anyway. I will then leave all slings at home and just have the backpack.
The wraps weigh almost nothing and I will have the option of carrying the original backpack if I feel like I need it. I’ve admittedly never been to Africa but I travel via Bushplane in northern Canada from time to time and I know this arrangement will work up there also and the end terrain is as rugged in its own right.
In these circumstances I’m not sure that it matters which backpack you choose as long as your gear fits.
