The large mount probably cannot overcome the cosine to the fourth power rule (or law). However it can help overcome vignetting due the lens barrel and other diameter restrictions.

The "automatically on" lens correction with Z lenses on a Z body can improve things, provided the software can read the appropriate file codes.

Keep in mind that the screw mount Leica diameter is only 39mm (The M mount is slightly larger) so a small size can work for the 35mm format.

Yes but - the 39mm size works though not as well with many focal lengths/aperture combinations toward the frame with wider diameter mounts. The basic reason is that light reaching the corners of a sensor can be closer to vertical with wider mount lenses.

The Z mount is significantly about improved corner performance, with a bonus of wider f mounts being possible.

So far there are just two Z lenses on sale - with significantly improved performance particularly in the frame corners compared to pre Z.

In lots of ways good photography is much more about how equipment is used rather than the equipment being used.
