Lenses for close up, not macro.

When I want absolute detail I will use a macro lens ( either a 100mm or a 150mm ) with stacking as an option, however, that degree of detail is not always wanted but clarity and IQ is.  In order to avoid depth of field problems when photographing flowers and fungi I will often use a Canon 15-85mm lens and this, at least to me,  has given reasonable results. I do wonder though if there are better lens options, Googling inevitably refers me to macro lenses so I wondered if anyone here has some suggestions.
