That's a good point, and the motorized opening and closing is perhaps one of the biggest reasons why there are reliability issues.  That was the problem with my second copy.  When I use mine, I keep it locked open (and thus extended).  Unfortunately, that means it's bulkier when carrying it around, but it's also faster to use, so that's the trade-off.

That said, I've never had a problem with other mechanical-only compacting lenses like the 30-110 or larger F mount zooms.
