I'm wondering if the operative words here might not be "sales person".  Could it be possible that he was a good enough salesman to have recognized that this prospective customer was only willing to spend so much on that day, versus coming back (and ending up with another salesman) or losing a sale altogether, and was gently "steering" him towards something that would be in the right price range?

I still remember the manager at one retail store I worked at while in college - "SWAT" Sell What's Available Today.  To be clear, I'm not saying I agree with it, because I don't, but I can tell you that it happens way more than most people might think.  Salespeople often get paid on commission; your best interests are not always the same as theirs.  And yes, I am fully aware that there are ethical salespeople out there who do not act like this.
