6d AF Sluggish in lower light

I've recently completed two receptions and found auto focus took a good second or two to grab focus on my subjects.   The situation is indoor cocktail hour dim light but not super dark. I'm shooting center point back button focus, lock on face,  recompose and snap picture.  I had a flash on as well and i believe it assisted.

Just last weekend did homecoming pictures with off camera flashes and had the same experience. Press the focus, delay for a bit, then focus starts and grabs it.

I tried dpaf and it works amazingly fast but notcompatible with flash!

I shot with the 6d for 4ish years and find the mkii is much slower focusing.

Any thoughts, others having similar experiences?

Thanks!
