Another area Canon put a lot of thought and effort into was the integration of the touchscreen into the user interface, a feature which attracted a lot of criticism at the time. I think this may have been the first Canon APS C camera to have this feature (or the second if the SL1 come out first) but on the M, it was front and center and difficult to avoid.

The Canon T4i/650D DSLR was actually the first and preceded the M by a few months.  The M was lieterally a repackaged T4i.
