I would love to hear your suggestions for a travel camera
Oct 1, 2018
As I am getting older, have weak back, and am retired, and will travel more, my need for a lightweight travel camera truly comes to mind. I'm leaving Thursday night.
The SD1M is too heavy, so is the SDQ; so they are staying home. only DPQ0 may come along.
My Panny LX100 lacks IQ (my rating: 75%) but especially lacks resolution (only 12MP) and zoom range (24-70 equiv. only). So, I am hunkering for something else. I bought this camera to shoot real estate with when we were looking for another place to live abroad.
When I visit cities, I love to get entire buildings in, so I need at least 24mm wide, but also especially little details on buildings, often found on the top, like statues, carvings, faces, mosaics, ornaments, etc., etc.
And for that I need sufficient zoom reach. With my SD1M/SDQ I often use my 18-300C, and often use it at its end range; I certainly don't like the vignetting of that lens, although it's pretty sharp. Thus: I am often in need of around 300-450mm equivalent. And thus, will need IBIS or at least IS in the lens.
Afterwards, of the best shots, I will make individual prints and put them together in a book, print size around 5x7 or half A4. Speed and ease of processing RAWS is tantamount. I am therefore snooting my SDQ in DNG.
Considering so far the following possibilities:
1. Sony A6500-- PROS: I have MC11 adapter so can still use Sigma SA lenses; CONS: Sony colors to exactly exciting.
2. Some Fuji 24MP camera with two lenses to cover 24-ca. 400mm equivalents. PROS: nice colors; CONS: new system; cannot use SA lenses. Not sure which one is "good enough"
3. Olympus E-M1 mark II; PROS: lightweight, small lenses; CONS: same as Fuji. Less resolution (20MP). PROS: features; CONS: expensive.
4. Sony RX100-VI; PROS: pocketable, lightweight 20MP; lens 24-200 Equiv.; CONS: it's a point and shoot (although a very good one); pricey.
5.Sony RX10-IV, PROS: great lens with 24-600 equiv. reach; 20MP; CONS: IQ not 100% imho, but good enough for my post shooting purpose. CONS: Pricey; fixed lens.
6. SONY A7-iii; best APS-C camera on market today, 24MP, FF. Cons: need heavy lenses to take advantage f it. But can use SA lenses with the MC11. But A7-iii is not that lightweight.
Extreme wide angles can be covered by taking along DPQ0 with 2 batteries.
WHAT DO Y O U THINK?
If you're over 60 (lol), what's your travel camera?
