Tamron 100mm-400mm with TC for birding?

I've been quite happy to use my adapted Tamron for birding.

It's fast and lightweight, so I can hand hold it, unlike the 600mm Sigma and Tamron. But the range is still a little short.

So I've been thinking of adding one of the Tamron teleconverters to my kit. Either the 1.4 or the 2.0. With the 2, of course, there's more range, and I could enjoy some larger moon photography too. But then there's the light loss which will lose autofocus for me in more occasions.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience using the 100-400mm with teleconverters, and how did they work out for you at different times of day?
