Polarizer gel on a softbox

I came across this old Pop Photo article describing cross-polarizing softbox light for portraits, and as a newbie to this I wondered about the proper technique and location for gelling a 24"x36" softbox. Where do you place it and how do you keep it in place?

Also, the Rosco polarizing gels I see at B&H are pretty much all sheets from 8"x8" up to a maximum size of 20"x17" for $50 (or you can buy 17"x10ft rolls for $250). For just one softbox what's a good size gel to buy?

And how durable are they if I'm setting up and breaking down a softbox regularly?

Without cross-polarization. And with.
