Pictures of Person with Cat

A friend wants me to get pictures of her with her cat. I have a good amount of experience with dog photography. I often shoot close to wide open to throw the background out of focus, but I think that might not keep both her and her cat in focus. What apertures and focal lengths would you stick to in this situation? I know there isn't just one setting that I'd use the whole time but I'm wondering how wide an aperture I can get away with.

I'll have both my G7X II and my SL2 with an 18-250 and nifty 50. Do you have any other suggestions? If I need a small aperture, the background will be sharper. So I guess I'll need a background that isn't distracting.
