I usually prefer longer focal lengths, but it depends on the circumstances. Since you have the 35mm, I would experiment with it. A lot has to do with the background, and whether it helps the image or hurts it. Generally, cluttered or busy backgrounds ruin a shot, unless they are a key part of the story.

Try setting up a shot with your camera in landscape orientation. Frame the the shot with just little space above the subject's head, and take the shot. Next, rotate the camera to portrait orientation. There will now be more space top and bottom, but there will be less background on the sides. Take that shot, so you can compare later. Finally, you can move closer so there's not so much dead space above the subject. Take that shot too, and now you have three shots to compare.
