SEL70300 pls help me identify the problem

Hallo all,

I got myself a long range 70-300 to complement my 24-105 all-around lens.

I got it for inflight shots as well as open stadium sports of my kids.

I took some shots with this lens and found the crisp focus hit rate to be significantly less than that of the 24-105 in the same scenario.

I am not sure whether the heated, curved cockpit glass is to blame here, or merely the focus blur caused by too small of a shutter speed.

I tried SS of 1000 and higher where the subject has predictable movement, combined with Expanded Flexible Spot AF-C. I managed to get 1 out of possibly 20 burst shots in relatively acceptable focus. The rest are either blurred or show strange ghosting artefact round the subject.

I would be grateful for your comments in order for me to improve my technique.

Here, the subject is not sharp...

As above, subject displays ghosting artefact around its edges

I would call this an acceptable in-focus shot, yet not razor sharp...

By comparison, this is what I managed to get with 24-105:

Thank you in advance for your time,

Dom
