Digitizing slides

Can anyone recommend a good slide/film scanner?  I have several hundred Kodachrome slides mostly ASA 50 and 25, which I would like to scan to digital files at the highest possible quality.

I know I can pay for a commercial service but would prefer to do it myself if feasible. I need to weigh up the cost/benefits especially since, if I buy my own gear, it will only be used once.  I have no idea of what a minimum DP would be necessary if I buy my own scanner or how much I should expect to pay.

Any advice would be welcome.

TIA

Trevor
