Does an advanced amateur photographer need the sharpest lenses?
1

IMO, I would only use the sharpest lenses for scientific, product and macro photos. My style is landscape and head and shoulder portraits, and IMO sharpness is not required. Will you move  that close to see if a landscape image is really sharp or step back and enjoy what photographer accomplished? It is very few people who would like to see their face with very sharp blemishes. Most viewers of photos are looking for the beauty  of the photo. Most photographers look for sharpness. Appeal of a photo draws the viewers eye, NOT sharpness. Case in point; at an auction a customer buys a photo for mega bucks, a pixel-pepper looks at the edges of the photo with a powerful loupe  and states, "I will not give a dollar for it".
