First impressions following attending a Canon Roadshow
7

I was fortunate to be able to attend the Canon Full Frame Roadshow in London on Saturday, which was time well spent. Clive Booth gave a very interesting presentation on his experiences with the EOS R, and then we had three opportunities to use the R with a variety of lenses.

There wasn't much time to familiarise myself with the camera, but I was able to shoot with the new RF 24-105 and using the adapter, the 100 2,8 macro (I own one of these) and 85 1.4.

I have attached a few of the photos taken with the macro and 85. These are JPEGs straight from the camera, imported into Lightroom and then exported.

EOS R, EF adapter, 100mm macro, 1/320 f2.8 ISO 1250

EOS R, EF adapter, 100mm macro, 1/160 f5.6 ISO 3200

EOS R, EF adapter, 85 1.4, 1/200 f1.4 ISO 100

The image above cropped because I think it looks better

The camera sees in the dark. Press the AF ON button and the finder lights up. You can use your finger/thumb to move the focus point whilst doing this. Ideally I would have tried the eye tracking but didn't know how to enable it.

I have never used the 85 1.4 before and now want one!

Unfortunately the images taken with the zoom are all RAW files and I don't have a converter yet. Hopefully Lightroom will be updated soon.

I wish I had been able to spend 5 minutes familiarising myself with the camera before shooting, especially as I have no experience with mirrorless systems. For example I asked where the depth of field preview button was, only to discover that the EVF is WYSIWYG! That is very handy, especially for macro.

The camera is highly customisable, which did lead to a lot of head scratching on my part and faffing around when I should have been taking photos. Fortunately the Canon staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.

During the discussion I asked Clive why he would use the EOS R in place of a 'proper' video camera e.g. Cine EOS. The answer was size. Someone else there who is a film maker said that it complements a 5D1V and the Cine EOS cameras well, so the crop factor was not an issue in that workflow. Plus it has Canon Log.

In the time I had I was very impressed and highly recommend attending one of the Canon roadshows if you can.  I would replace my 6D/24-70 f4 with the EOS R/24-105 and hang onto the 7D2 for wildlife/sport. Canon are marketing this as a prosumer camera, and it will be fascinating to see what comes next. I need to start saving
