Birds in Flight and Apertures, advice needed.

Hi.

I have a question about apertures when shooting birds in flight. What I mainly want to know is, is it still possible and a good idea, to shoot a bird in flight on 2.8? Or will that mean not all of the bird is in focus? I assume it depends on the distance it is away? I ask because a wildlife photographer who I know told me he shoots a lot of his wildlife/bird shots on the 2.8, rather than stopping down to f4 etc...

Is it a good idea?
