My 5-year wish-list for Pentax
Sep 16, 2018
I am a prolific buyer and user of Pentax K-mount FF equipment.
This is a summary of my current Pentax wish-list for 2023:
- A continuing release of new Pentax FF K-mount lenses
A continuing release of new 3rd-party FF K-mount lenses
A continuing release of Pentax FF cameras that can use those lenses
Why do I care?
My main hobby is photography. Year by year, I want:
To get equivalent results with less effort.
... Or much more important:
To get better results from the same effort.
... And:
To do new types of photography. (I added "air-to-air" and "air-to-ground" in 2018).
Will Pentax be viable in 2013?
I believe (without proof) that Pentax could be a viable (niche) brand in 2023.
I know (and I don't need proof!) that "unfortunate" decisions by Ricoh/Pentax management could put Pentax into terminal decline by 2023.
It is obvious which I prefer!

I personally will want some (all?) of those lenses.
And the revenues from those lenses will help keep Pentax viable.
K-mount lenses will have a larger market than certain alternatives, (see below).
I think Ricoh/Pentax should complete the current FF lens roadmap with K-mount lenses.
(Although I can imagine an argument for a new-mount "Large Aperture Wide Angle Single Focus" "*" lens).
A continuing release of new 3rd-party FF K-mount lenses
My first choice is to buy Pentax lenses.
But I've bought FF lenses from Laowa (Venus) and Samyang where there were holes in the Pentax range. There is also Irix.
A continuing release of Pentax FF cameras that can use those lenses
This is the contentious part!
I'm including at least one (hypothetical) new-mount mirrorless FF camera, plus a comprehensive K-mount adapter, in this category. (Perhaps accompanied by a new-mount mid-range moderate-aperture zoom).
The adapter will avoid alienating the users of K-mount lenses, (including me!), and enable new lenses to be released as K-mount for maximum Pentax market.
I'll post "Comparisons with the competition" in response to this current post.
If there isn't such a camera by 2023, I believe that will be an example of a decision that would put Pentax into terminal decline. It would send a message "Ricoh/Pentax is out of touch".
(I'm uncertain about new APS-C equipment in 2013. I probably don't need it, but many others will. Neither am I clear if/when a replacement or companion to the K-1ii should appear).
