you can increase the intensity for about thirty seconds by simply long pressing on one of the 4 buttons on the control wheel (can’t remember which one), without altering the overall settings in the menu. Then battery drain is minimal.

I couldn't find my M manual so I down loaded a PDF copy... I have looked and looked as well as the camera menu and pushed the four corners of the wheel... no cigar Could it be a feature on the M2 or newer? Any help would be great... perhaps it's a feature added by one of those add-on firmware companies (forgot their name). Thanks!

Bob it's the trash can,I used it often outdoors.

I no longer have the original M but I think you may have to set it up via the menus to function, once set it"s just a matter of a quick press to see what you're doing. You'll need to toggle it on or off though otherwise the dreaded battery drain becomes an issue.

Thanks for your response.  Peter has found it in the manual and on Monday I'll give it a try... as soon as I get the page # it's on   Honestly, I look through the LCD section and could not find it.  HABD
