Canon EOS M6 and M3 - Electronical and Mechanical Shutter Syncronization Problem
Sep 16, 2018
Hello Together,
For about one to two month now I discovered a problem with my Canon EOS M6. This Problem only occurs with manual lenses, as far as I can tell. I was even able to confirm this Problem with my M3, so please don't tell me, that my mechanical shutter is worn out and I should send in my cameras.
Preconditions:
- Canon EOS M3 and M6 (wasn't able to check it with other EOS M models)
- Manual Lens! --> In my case a Samyang 35 T1.3
- High Shutter Speeds --> starting around 1/500 up to 1/4000
Observed problem:
Darkening of the image from the top edge until the middle of the image. It is more prominent with 1/4000 and fades away with slower shutter speeds. Links for images are at the bottom!
It's indifferent to ISO, aperture and manual lenses. When you're shooting with a normal camera orientation (landscape mode) this darkening will not be as prominent. It even acts as soft graded ND Filter (it's maybe even a feature???). It's better observable in portrait mode.
Thesis:
The mechanical and the electrical shutter are not in sync, while a full manual lens or even no lens is attached. This means, that the electrical shutter is faster than the mechanical shutter, thus the darkening starts at the top edge. The mechanical shutter rolls from the top edge to the bottom edge of the sensor. Usually the image is upside down at the sensor, therefore the darkening starts instead of the bottom from the top.
My question:
Can anyone confirm this my problem? For a better understand please find attached some images:

I hope those images below clarify my point. I'm just wondering, if you're experiencing the same behavior.
