Hey guys - what is the fastest (in terms of read/write speed) SD card that can be used in the a99ii ?

Thanks !

A99mk2 don't support UHS-II.
The fastest UHS-I card is Sandisk Extreme PRO R: 95MB/s W:90MB/s.
Sony also have R: 95MB/s W:90MB/s card, but Sandisk Extreme PRO is faster when use in camera.

If you want, you can use UHS-II card, it is totally backward compatible.
But you won't get any advantage from the card when using in the camera.
The camera card slot don't have the extra pin for UHS-II.
The only advantage is, you can transfer photos to computer faster if you have a UHS-II card reader & fast hard drive(WD Black)/SSD.

But be careful, some UHS-II have lower write speed than UHS-I.
Such as the Lexar Professional 1000x 32GB, R: 150MB/s W: 60MB/s.
Most online selling hide the write speed on that card intentionally.

Thanks, very useful.

The interface between the card reader and computer is the most likely bottleneck. Most UHSII readers are USB3, but there is no speed advantage if you connect it to a USB2 slot.

If you correctly have USB3 connections all the way, it is noticeably faster to transfer from the card. IMHO this is worth the effort, particularly with a card full of raw files :)

Anyhow the bodies of A-mount aren't capable of doing more than 50MB/s when writing I think.

Meaning that the buffer of A99ii is pretty huge taking into account that it needs to shoot 12fps of raw files of 80MB.

I don't recall the number of shots before hiting buffer but it's more than enough and easy to find on the net.

Probably best card is

Sony SD

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Memory-UHS-II-R260MB-SF-M32/dp/B01D8H087G?th=1

It's UHS-II SD , but anyway better than Sandisk UHS-I SD.

People already compared UHS-I and UHS-II on Sony a99-II, UHS-II about 4 times faster

I'm unable to find any tests that echo that stat, is that what the graphic is showing? It looks like a screen shot of a phone, is that part of the test?

It's show the speed of writing to the SD card.

It's show the speed of writing compressed RAW image to the SD cards.
Both cards - Sony SD. Test from sony-club.ru.

I don't own any new UHS II but I don't think those new cards will be faster than the fastest Sandisk 95MB/s simply because the bus of the camera is not using the UHS II speed anyway.

So supposedly the camera should be using the fastest speed of around 50MB/s of the bus.

I doubt that UHS II could improve but yes that has to be checked anyway and would be a great news for me if those sdcards are really faster than any Sandisk 95MB/s... But I keep thinking that Amount cameras aren't up to use the full speed of UHS I already, so I don't see how it could be faster with UHS II

The Sony SF-32UY3 card on the left is a old card with very low write speed.
The 90MB/s written on the card is max. read speed not write speed.
According to above image, the write speed of that card is:
( 57 RAW x 41MB ) / 139s = 16.8MB/s

According to Imaging-resource,
SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s UHS-I only take 40s to clear 59 raw images.
The write speed in A99mk2 is 60.5MB/s.

SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s UHS-I is 3.6 times faster than the card on the left.

The new Sony UHS-II 300MB/s card seem faster than the SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s UHS-I, around 10% but it is 3.5 times more expensive. ;-)

* The test result can be vary, because it is tested by different people & camera unit. *

:) Generally, the write speed of the old Sony card should be 70mb/s
not 16 MB/s :) But alas, this is not quite true. :)

I almost daily use Samsung Pro plus SD,
so as the Sandisk SanDisk Extreme Pro SD. The write speed is the same for about 40 seconds.
The only difference is that the plastic Sandisk has already started to fall apart and the card has given a couple of failures when reading, I had to restore the files. In the same time no problem at all with Samsung cards.
But certainly my next card will be by Sony SD or Samsung microSD with Adapter. :)

Digging out the old thread because I barely remember that one website dedicated to Alpha cameras recommend USH II cards for the potential benefit of faster clearance. What I remember is that the bottle neck of A99II (and probably A77II) is IO which is around 60 MB/s.

I went cheap, inserting two Samsung Evo + 250 Gb microSD and while capacity is always there, I want more speed.

Sandisk and couple of other brands now have UHS-I cards that support faster read speeds up to 200 MB/s in their readers. I assume this requires more power than adding the second link as in UHS-II. I haven't tried any of these. I will add the 1 TB PNY Pro Elite I bought recently is pretty quick even without the non-standard stuff.

UHS-II is expensive. I have a slower Sony Tough M one. The non-standard UHS-I cards seem to be better deals.

Removed comment - thought this was a fresh thread.

Though an old thread, I believe the bottle neck of older Sony camera bodies us their limited IO.

I use an older San Disk card and its lack of speed has never been a problem. How has it been a problem for you?

There's no problem for me either and just want to squeeze more speed from A99 II.

Thank you for your Summary.

According to Imaging-resource,
SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s UHS-I only take 40s to clear 59 raw images.
The write speed in A99mk2 is 60.5MB/s. And

UHS-I: theoretical maximum transfer speeds up to 104MB/s

Taking Sandisk as an example

SanDisk Extreme SD UHS-I Card (Sequential Write PerformanceUp to 60MB/s) - Just make

SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDHC™ And SDXC™ UHS-I Card (Sequential Write perrformanceUp to 90MB/s) - More than enough

SanDisk Ultra® SDHC™ UHS-I card and SDXC™ UHS-I card (Up to 120MBPs) - waste money
