SD15 Super-Resolution (double-width)

Lately, new cameras are coming out with super-resolution technology based on pixel-shifting. An article here explains how to simulate that with hand-held continuous shots. Slight improvements in noise and acutance are claimed. So I gave it a quick go on the SD15, shooting 18 images in normal resolution 2640x1760px.

Apologies to members with limited connection speed - files are largish by my standards.

For comparison, I picked one image and saved it out of SPP as a double-size JPEG:

JPEG quality 10/12

I aligned my 18 8-bit TIFF images using align_image_stack.exe (command-line utility) with default switches. Then I merged them together using TuFuse Pro, all settings default.

The result:

There seems to be a loss of brightness but TuFuse has weighting curves which I left at default, not understanding them that well yet.

After a quick adjustment or two in RawTherapee, the super-res image looks more like the SPP output:

For myself, since I don't print, this is an academic exercise. With everything at default, I'd say the slight improvement is hardly worth the time and trouble. With optimal settings, the result could be quite a bit mo' better than a simple up-size though.

Comments/questions welcome.
