I'm wondering if Canon and Nikon have some priority in picture quality that prevents them from using faster sensors. It's not like they can't afford it.

Nikon sensors are most likely manufactured by Sony and both brands' sensors share a lot of characteristics.

The Z6 and Z7 should be quite comparable to the A7III and A7IIIR in terms of readout speed, with different trade-offs here and there. We'll know soon enough.

I thought I read that Nikon was using a different sensor now.

The Z is certainly no speed demon either.    Fast continuous shooting is not a priority for me, but better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.   5 FPS has gotten me some nice series on baseball, soccer, and judo, but I can see how more would guarantee the perfect pose.

If I shot a lot of sports, I wouldn't consider either Canon or Nikon mirror less.   I guess sports and wildlife shooting will remain a DSLR thing for a while.  Longer lenses don't benefit from the new mounts anyway.
