I don't see the R in my future.  With it I see Canon is either 1) continuing to gimp their cameras to promote market segmentation more than I like or 2) they are so far behind technologically that no amount of firmware upgrades will fix its issues.

I think it is obvious that Canon has major issues with their image processors being very weak.  They have gotten around this by doubling up processors on their higher end cameras.  The fact the R has only one processor shows it is a lower tier R camera and very likely the equivalent of the 6D2 in the lineup.  Expect another R camera soon with two processors and hopefully a much better set of innards having IBIS and much more robust AF and frame rates.

I think Canon is going to try and sell an R model with the capabilities of the A7/3 for the price of the 5D4.  I doubt this will work.
