Myself, I really like the R (am terribly disappointed that Canon did not incorporate IBIS, though), but feel it's priced too high compared to the competition. So, most likely, I'm going to wait for a refurb deal in the future like I did with the 6D2, and, barring that, maybe switch systems when I upgrade next (but I'm thinking I won't).

This raises the question, then, that if I have the 6D2, which is relatively new, and is a camera I like a lot, why upgrade again so soon? Well, that's 'cause the R has a lot of things I really like and could put to good use -- if it weren't for the lack of IBIS, I'd get it now. But, yes, of course, staying with the 6D2 for a while is the prudent course (I kept the 5D for 7 years and the 6D for 5 years, so that might be how it goes this round).

Anyway, I'm curious what others are thinking, so...

what type of photography do you do that lens IS is unsuitable and need IBIS

Lens IS would be just dandy -- if only my lenses had it:

  • Canon 15 / 2.8 FE
  • Sigma 24 / 1.4A
  • Sigma 35 / 1.4A
  • Sigma 50 / 1.4A
  • Sigma 70 / 2.8A macro
  • Canon 100 / 2unsutable
  • Canon 200 / 2.8L

Well, I do have one IS lens that I just got: Canon 70-200 / 4L IS II. But I think my lens list neatly explains my interest in IBIS. That said, I'd trade my whole setup for an R + 28-70 / 2. But guess what? Still no IS. Kinda sucks, doesn't it? I mean, not a deal breaker, but given that *everyone else* has IBIS but Canon, well, it sucks.

But wait -- why do I need IS at all with such fast lenses? Well, oddly enough, sometimes I want to stop down for more DOF in low light where motion blur is a non-issue (or even desirable), want the freedom to take the shot without a tripod, and don't want to use flash which will not only add bulk to my setup, but alter the lighting of the scene, if flash is even possible to use.

And then there are times when I'd want IS even at f/1.2:

5D + 50 / 1.2L at f/1.2, 1/60, ISO 800:

Would sure have liked to have taken that shot at f/1.2, 1/8, ISO 100.

yes it looks like IBIS would be handy for you ...i only have the 35F2 IS in FF now.. did have the 24-105F4IS ...but it just was not sharp and mine was very flair prone so sold it ..had the 17-55F2.8IS very good lens but stopped using it when i got the 5D ... once you have done FF you are spoilt ..i do have an M but use it for its compactness ...i just put it in the car on the off chance and for travel when i physically cannot carry a FF kit

the only fast IS lens i can think of is the EF85mm F1.4IS

thers is the EF 35F2is and the tamron 45 and 85 F1.8 lenses but maybe not up to the faster lenses you have

There is no argument for FF vs APS-c (or m43) with shallow DOF..as it's a law of physics and a very subjective personal thing if you want to make use of the shallow DOF only FF can offer
