That's odd, my 5D had a perfectly well defined half-press stop, like every other Canon I've ever handled. Perhaps the units you have tried had something like fluff under the button.

... 5D and 1D have (what people call) a "hair-line shutter release", where you slightly touch the button to focus, and lightly press to shoot.

Yep, with a well-defined half-way point between slightly and lightly.

But if every full-frame Canon camera has a "hard" button, as you say, that would be great.

No I didn't say they are all hard. Some are softer than others but none of them have a "non-halfpress".
