STM is just the focusing motor in the lens, its very smooth and geared toward video use.  It works just fine for photos though.

With the Canon crop factor (1.6 vs 1.5 on Nikon) the 24mm lens gives, as others stated, a 38mm FOV equivalent.  I have the same lens and I find it great as a walk around lens, it can cover landscapes just fine along with day to day shooting.  But if it was my only lens I'd find it very limiting.

If you want a more versatile lens check out the 18-55 STM (kit lens), they're usually around $100 used and are quite good lenses for the price.  You may find a EF 24-70 limiting for landscape or general use on a crop.  A better all around zoom may end up being the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 if you need a faster lens, or the EF-S 15-85 if you dont mind a variable aperture, though both will set you back quite a bit of $$.
