Don, I'm not sure where you got this idea from but the A7III AF is definitely 'pro level' and is better than the 5Dmk4's AF.
In the field shooting next to photographers I respect who have many years experience with Canon and now shoot Sony where do you get yours.
We are in the "he says, she says" kind of discussion. There are numerous reviews out there showing and stating that A7III / A9 AF is definitely at D5 and 1DXII level.
I do not remember having read that the 5D mk IV had 1DXII AF performance...
"the fact that you could literally swap a Canon 1DX II for an a7 III and still get a similar or better hit-rate at an action event is unprecedented."
So you have no first hand experience with a 1DXMKII or 5DMKIV or for that matter an A7 nor have you shot in the field with these cameras nor know or talk to other photographers who have years of experience shooting action especially BIF.
Let's not take our word for it. Here is just 2 first google examples, one from a Canon 1DXII user and the other is a vide from Michael The Maven:
https://www.borrowlenses.com/blog/sony-a9-vs-canon-1d-x-mark-ii-actionadventure-shooting/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xo9qKPVhEk&feature=youtu.be
Will you dismiss those tests, with video as evidence?
I guess you miss the numerous comments that I made that said the A9 was as good as the 1DXMKII and D5 I was referring to the A7 series which is not as as good as the A9 please try to actually read what I right.
This is marketing BS, sorry. Don, surely you're old enough to remember that lenses like the 85/1.2 and the 50/1.2 appeared originally on FD mount which has a much smaller throat diameter and crucially a very long flange distance.
If the bazooka-sized Canon 28-70/2 is a big seller Sony will make an equivalent straight away.
Based that statement off of the head of Sigma's interview on the issues for designing high end glass for the E mount maybe he actually knows more then you.
It may be true, it does not prevent though to have amazing GM lenses or Zeiss that rival or are better even than Canon lenses.
I am not bashing Sony but only trying to point out that as good as they are they also have issues.
Totally correct, just not these ones.
So what experience do you actually have shooting these cameras the A9 is a very good action camera as good as the D5 and 1DXMKII not better but as good. The A7 series very good cameras but they are not as good as the A9 for action including AF.
The A7 III does have the same AF as the A9 and is therefore virtually as good if you do not need to shoot at more than 8 frames per second and with no blackout (something that Canon cannot do anyway).
Based off of is not the same as.
