A concept camera based on Google Pixel

No camera is made perfect. Everyone wants different things from a camera. From small size to bigger sensor, wishes are endless. I have used over a dozen cameras over the years since I got interested in photography and lately video making. All I wish was more and more features in my cameras for lesser price. I guess this is what most people wants. Not talking about Leica owners

These are the main wish list for most of us I believe (enthusiast photographers)-

  • Smaller form factor,
  • Great image quality,
  • Professional video features,
  • RAW shooting,
  • Ease of use,
  • cheaper price (~$1200)

Lately I am very impressed with my Google Pixel camera phone. The picture quality for that sensor size is just amazing. Yes, I know it’s the image processing algorithms which are playing a crucial role here apart from camera sensor itself but in the end, we don’t care if it’s processor or software or whatever. If a camera outputs a superb image quality, photographer’s will love it.

I haven’t used my Panasonic cameras for casual shoot since I got this phone. It’s portable and fits into pocket. Even for video, this thing is amazing. Shoots 4K video and I don’t have to buy expensive SD cards (I have 128 gb version). Even I can edit the 4K video in phone itself. My windows laptop with 8 gb ram does not handle 4K editing that good.

Hence, as a design enthusiast and camera lover, I came up with some basic design for what a possible future camera might look like. Named it Google Pixel A

Google Pixel A Front view. It has many lenses/sensors with different focal lengths

We are entering into a time where CPU power is cheap and machine learning is taking it’s place in everyday objects.

A camera Grip is a must for any camera

This view shows all necessary slots and also battery compartment at bottom. Notice the flash ring around macro lens?

I was amazed at a post on Petapixel which describes how machine learning can be used to remove noise in low light images. Having seen all of these new tech, I believe we will soon won’t need fast lens or bigger sensor for low light photography.

Having seen what Google can do with one camera and great software, having 5–6 small cameras units with different focal lengths (macro also) will eliminate need to carry large lenses.

Back side with mics on top plate.

The camera should be able to shoot video in HDR and LOG profile. Since this is mainly software area and CPU power is no problem, it should handle these tasks easily. Not to mention 4K 120p if possible. Too much?

This is still very basic design and far from a working perfect camera. Many more parts needs to be done here but this should be able to give an idea of camera look n feel. I leave designing user interface for some other day.

There it is. Basic design of what my perfect camera would look like. Once again I thank this platform and all photographers here. Amazing people. Cheers!
