If you have the Sony 16-35 f/2.8 GM and you try to use the new Breakthrough Photography magnetic filter system, you will find vignetting issues on the widest end. I just received mine today and was disappointed to find this problem despite the declaration on their website that it was designed to eliminate vignetting down to 16mm. I emailed their support asking them about it and am waiting on a response.

In other respects I actually would like the system. I think it has a lot going for it. Maybe they will find a way to fix this in future versions of the magnetic filter adapters or CPLs.

I received a response from BP about the vignetting issue and it was apparently a known issue with the current magnetic adapter rings that will be solved with the new magnetic wheels:

"The wheel should be available in the next few weeks in limited thread sizes and solves the 82mm vignetting problem, which was known"

Funny. When I brought this up to them a week ago, they said it was "the first they're hearing about this" — which could mean they never tested 16mm before shipping the product, or this specific lens. I'm having the same issue with the same lens as you note. Ultimately after a lot of back and forth I got the same answer, that they upcoming magnetic wheels will be "0.5mm better" with regards to vignetting. I guess we'll be able to confirm that only when they start shipping the wheels.

Well that makes what they told me a bit worse, since it implies it was only "known" for about a week. I'm not happy with their response so far. I'm less happy that they never addressed my main concern, which is thIs quote from their website:

"Our all new X100 Holder has been designed from the ground up to eliminate vignetting down to 16mm on a full-frame sensor."

This is so obviously not true that it should be removed, at least until they actually have a working solution for sale on their website.

I like the idea of this enough that I may wait for the "magnetic wheel" to come out before returning it.

I'd just noticed a similar issue with the 24-70GM @ f/2.8 on the wide end, so thanks for the update about the retooling on the filter holder. My thought was to bin the Sony plastic petal lens hoods and leave these filter holders in their place with a magnetic Breakthrough UV installed. This way its a quick swap-out for whatever magnetic filter takes my fancy, and the plastic Sony petal hood stays in the box back at the office.

Cheers, I'll call Breakthrough for clarification!

I sent Breakthrough the below:

"Is there an ETA on when you will have the updated version that addresses the vignetting issues the current magnetic system has?"

The reply was the below

"We have received a limited number of 77mm magnetic wheels and they are being sent to our pros for review while the rest of the inventory is received over the next two months."

I sent them an email just yesterday and received the exact same response. They must be getting this a lot.

This is tall order. For some ultra wide lense with small barrel like the Loxia 21, it can only accept one thin filter without vignette. It does not allow any after market lens hood even I add a step up ring.

It's not that tall. After my disappointment with the BP filter holder I went out and purchased a Kase K8 magnetic filter holder. It has a magnetic CPL similar to the BP one, although no current ND options. With my Sony a7Riii and Sony 16-35 f/2.8 GM it does not vignette at 16mm to any significant degree. Even BP support says the next version of their magnetic adapter wheels will not vignette, but we will see.

By "vignette" I mean the edges of the filter holder, CPL, or any other physical piece of the equipment does not show in the photo.

Hi guys,

Will this be ok on a 72mm thread lens , at 16mm (16-35)

Thanks
I don't own any such lens, unfortunately. The only way to know would be to try it out, unless someone else here has one.

Has anyone tried these with the 24-105G? I'm specifically interested to know if they cause vignetting. The margins are pretty tight for adding things on to the end of that lens in terms of vignetting--there's even a little bit at the wide end when you use slim 3mm filters. This system looks awesome, but I'm concerned it will cause massive amounts of vignetting because it looks so thick and chunky.

I had a long chat with their tech support and strongly suggested they tested the 24-105 ASAP with their magnetic filter holder before releasing it into the wild. Their old magnetic filter holder vignetted with the 24-70GM @ f.2.8 on the 24mm end. I'd suspect the 24-105 would be even worse given the design of these 24-105's.

I Just got off the phone my 77mm wheel ships today the 82mm is six to eight weeks away.

I think the company makes good products at least the reviews of the color shift and quality of the glass are good. They are real short on common sense however and beat to a different drum.

Trying to figure out what they sell and where to find the magnetic ring adapters on thier web site is next to impossible without emails and phone calls. I just had them send me receipts for my $1,600 worth of stuff I have bought from them and Kathy was indignant and said out of thousands of orders they maybe get ten people who ask for a receipt or invoice? Funny ever single thing I get from a thousand other companies comes with a receipt. Oh well talking to them is like trying to talk to a fire hydrant.

I have no idea what to carry my six apapter rings in since they are 105mm in diameter and all the filter pouches are for 100x150 I will try the ruggard and seven5 that say 100mm and hope they will fit. I found I can get three into a zippered CD case but no more than three due to the depth of them and the magnetic wheels being thicker yet probably only two will fit in CD case.

I have 6 of their magnetic filter ring adapters, their Z100 holder and 2 GND's and their magnetic Night Sky, CPL, UV & 3 ND filters in the magnetic and am waiting for the 77 & 82mm wheels.

Does anybody have any idea for a case or cases that will fit in my camera bags?

I can vouch for the quality of their stuff. I've got a circular polarizer and then a set of 3, 6, and 10 stop ND filters (all the screw-on versions). No complaints in use. I had a little trouble in that it was hard to grip the polarizer to screw it off, but I bought a second one to fit a larger lens and that one has no problems whatsoever. Very easy to grip all around. No color shift whatsoever in any of their polarizers or NDs. Only 1 stop light loss on the polarizer and very easy to clean and tough. Plus, hard to argue with the 25 year guarantee.

I will say that they can be a little hit or miss in the customer service department. They do try to take care of their customers, for the most part. The buy-back example is the best example of that, and they have been very responsive and helpful when I've asked questions about their products in anticipation of a purchase. But if you're critical, they can sometimes be a little snippy. For example, I emailed them about the removal issue described above with a couple suggestions on how I thought they could solve the problem and the email I received in return was a little testy.

Still, they are my go-to for filters. Love their quality, their efforts to innovate and continue to improve, and their emphasis on designing and manufacturing a product in the USA.

I don’t often post here but I can offer some insight.

The original claim of no vignette at 16mm was prior to the launch of the magnetic system, using just their regular X100 adapter rings, which work fine. Obviously the magnetic system adds some depth. So they are within their rights to leave that claim up on the site, but should maybe add a disclaimer for the magnetic system.

I use Canon and if I leave the 77mm Breakthrough UV filter on the lens then attach the magnetic adapter “ring”, I get a very small vignette at 16mm. If I remove the UV and screw in just the magnetic ring then I get no vignette. Same goes for attaching the X100 holder to that setup.

The same applies to my 24-70/4L IS.

I am yet to receive the new magnetic wheel and will test again.

Even with the small vignette I would happily take the BP system over others due to quality, convenience and speed. The wheel may make this even better.

I also have a suspicion that BP only tested their system on Canon, not Nikon or Sony or all of them, which would have been smarter.

I got the 77mm wheel two weeks ago and like itm my 82mm wheel should show up in the next 30 days.

BT has excellent stuff I think it is the best hands down!

At first I thought what's the point of having all these adapter rings for the magnetic filters but bought a nice case from Ruggard that holds almost all of them including he X100 wheel and my 3 GND's. It is another thing to carry in or attached to the bag or belt but it's all there when you need it for every lens I own almost.

I especially like their magnetic CPL it does not darken as much as some but only costs you 1 stop and I feel it provides a much more realistic image than my previous CPL's from Marumi, Hoya and Sony T Zeiss.

That's actually interesting, thank you for the insight. However, I'm of the mindset that a company's marketing should be accurate. For my needs the vignetting and hard-to-rotate magnetic ring adapters were an issue, so I recently returned almost all my BP purchases (magnetic CPL, X100 holder, a grad, etc).

The updated magnetic wheels, according to one Youtube review I saw who got a copy, are much easier to rotate but have the additional problem of not fitting on their X100 holder. If this is true, may I suggest that this company does not know what it is doing. How would you use a grad with the magnetic filters?

I am so glad I got a Kase K8 magnetic filter holder. Its a MUCH better designed product in every regard, with a magnetic CPL and a very light-tight and vignette-free square filter holder. The only problem is getting one. I ordered one via a UK photographer's website: James Grant Photography

I bought a 82mm clear filter from them, but I recently returned it. Although of high quality, it was very difficult to impossible to get off the lens if put on too tight. My previous B+W filters are made of brass and do not have this problem.

Their customer service department is weird. I've gotten into arguments with them when I complained about the vignetting issue that their website claims was not an issue. They can be quite snarky at times. On the flip side, when I asked for a refund I got an immediate positive response and a return shipping label. I was not expecting a shipping label, so that was going above and beyond. :-)

Kase K8 or BT?

I agree on being difficult to communicate with they are kind of argumentive but they do come through. I think it is a classic case of they have excellent glass but not real sharp on web site design and useability and being able to provide clear answers.

Thus you have emails and phone calls, supposedly they have lens caps coming for the magnetic filters they may even be magnetic not sure.
