Let’s do away with the red dot button

Not that my design is radical or fantastic in anyway. It is so simple and I tried to see if it would work on my GH4 or EM1.2 and it would be better.

G9 joystickposition seems okey for sure but still if you have only one hand to use, moving your thumb to the joystick position means you lose your grip and it becomes less ergonomic. Also: the space next to the EVF is crammed. It will work fine. Anyway: where I positioned it, it is a lot better from that perspective.

What could be possible is to make the AE/AFlock button a joystrick. Push it in and AF/AF is locked, move it and it is joystick? Don't know if people would like to use both at the same time, which of course would be impossible.

Some Ricoh point’n’shoot compacts had a little tactile joystick for the “OK” button - which you could push to get “OK” but otherwise could be rolled into several other uses.  It was quite intuitive in use.

However my point is that the “red video button” has become a specifically identified button like the marked “playback button”.  Users of the video features might want it better placed - those that do not “do” video and wish that it was right out of the way and/or could be used for something other than video.

On Panasonic bodies it has only two settings “on” and “off” and cannot be otherwise re-purposed.  So I set it to off and it is useless.  Even more useless is the fact that if it does get accidentally pressed when set “off” it at least does not rush off and start recording unwanted video but does come up with an annoying screen message telling the user that it is switched off - “yes, I know it is switched off - because I don’t need it!”. (Grrr)

So my solution is to do away with the video button entirely - red dot and everything and just have the usual Fn buttons wherever they can be fitted.  Make video capability assignable to any Fn button and let the user decide where the video Fn best fits for them or leave it out of the Fn button selection entirely. Everybody happy.
