Epson R2880 - Cleaning/Replacing Ink Maintenance Collector

I've had an Epson R2880 printer for several years. It's always performed admirably, and I've always used Epson's own ink cartridges. However, there is one thing that I've begun to wonder about and about which I can't find anything in the Epson manual.

At the bottom of the printer are a series of metal plates surrounded by a thin piece of foam sponge material (see photo below & red box area). Every time you start the printer, and every time you change ink cartridges, the printer goes through a lengthy process of what I assume is clearing any ink in the inkjets. All that waste ink is sprayed down on to that thin foam sponge material.  Common sense says that, at some point, that needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Does anyone know anything about this?  If so, any information or insight would be much appreciated.
